Global Warming Update 3/2/2011

Today's global warming update is related to an article posted recently about how Scientists believe that the snowstorms in the United States are related to Global Warming.

These specific Scientists are known as the Union of Concerned Scientists, which are a non profit environmental group.

Jeff Masters, director of meteorology for the Weather Underground had this to say about the issue: "Heavy snowstorms are not inconsistent with a warming planet," "The old adage, 'It's too cold to snow,' has some truth to it," said Masters. "A colder atmosphere holds less moisture, limiting the snowfall that can occur."

At one point in the winter, the only state that was not covered in snow was Florida, 49 of the 50 states had some snow. This unusual trend has got these Scientists pointing to global warming as the cause of this.

However, a report from the National and Oceanic Atmospheric Administration's Climate Science Investigations (CSI) says otherwise:
"If global warming was the culprit, the team would have expected to find a gradual increase in heavy snowstorms in the mid-Atlantic region as temperatures rose during the past century," the report stated. "But historical analysis revealed no such increase in snowfall. Nor did the CSI team find any indication of an upward trend in winter precipitation along the Eastern Seaboard."
